In 2020, statistics show that out of the 51% of the global population who use social media, the average user spends 145 minutes every day scrolling. Considering most of these users are assumed to be: between the ages 13 – 60; have relatively consumerist lifestyles; and live in urban areas (high emissions, major construction development, highly polluted areas etc.); we think the impact of addressing this group specifically, has the potential to raise significant awareness and inspire change in the lives of everyday individuals in accordance with the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Our idea aims to appeal to small and large organisations, providing an accreditation scheme unlike any other, that will unify every industry, creating a globally recognised symbol of sustainability. The strategy aims to both incentivise individuals to make less environmentally and socially harmful lifestyle choices and put pressure onto companies into making their products and services more sustainable. Digital marketing will be at the forefront of the scheme which will incentivise organisations to ‘get accredited’ as the symbol gains global recognition. Whilst many reputable accreditation bodies exist, our scheme will unify every sector, internationally, whether it be transportation, energy, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, consumer goods, entertainment, construction etc. The process of awarding the certification will be rigorous. Organisations such as the MSC certification for sustainable fishing for example have been accused of accrediting fisheries with blatant harmful practices, and hence possible corruption of the scheme will be closely monitored. Further development involves raising awareness in future generations by developing digital educational resources and tools to be used in schools. For example, developing games and apps for children to instil fundamental ideologies intrinsic to sustainable lifestyles. The circular economy model will form the basis of these activities.
