Our idea is to combine the creativity and innovation of young people with the expertise and technical skills of industry professionals. We propose a mutually beneficial collaboration between these two groups which will provide young people with a realistic insight into the engineering industry as well as provide out of the box solutions for experts in the field.
We believe the best way to achieve this is to encourage young people from youth groups and organisations so that we can address the students who may feel engineering is not a career path for them and help promote diversity in the industry. At school, these students may have felt a barrier to accessing engineering due to preconceived bias. Typically for young people who don’t fit the mould of a ‘normal’ engineer, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds, they never consider it as an option. Through this concept we can help make the engineering industry more globally responsible for future generations.
Through rigorous education, all qualified engineers enter the field with the same mentality and skillset. Traditionally this has contributed to the major innovations in engineering. However, the future proposes new, unprecedented challenges which will require more unique perspectives. For the industry to be more globally responsible we need to diversify the industry to include a new way of thinking.
The project would take place over a long-term period whereby the industry professionals would present the engineering problem and work together with the young people to come up with an innovative solution. Our concept directly addresses the UN’s SDGs, specifically providing quality education. We believe through quality education we can help fulfil further SDGs such as reduced inequalities and climate action.
Hi everyone, I’m Richard, your mentor. I’ve had a look at your concept note and here is some feedback;
What worked well; you have effectively articulated the challenges you are trying to solve, the benefits to each party and the role collaboration plays in your solution to bringing positive change.
Even better if you can explain how existing ideas and solutions could be used to improve your project? What sort of engineering problems would your project consider trying to solve, and how could that align with the “regenerative” principle of global responsibility?
